Google Rolls Out ‘More Results’ on Mobile

Did you know that in 2017, mobile accounted for 50.3% of all web traffic? With this in mind, it’s no wonder that internet companies are doing more and more to enhance the mobile experience. Last week, Google launched a brand new ‘More results’ Feature for mobile users. This comes just days after the search engine giant announced it was testing the feature, so this move isn’t unexpected. Instead of having to click page 2, 3 etc to get to the next set of results, you can now simply click on the ‘More results’ button. The results will be loaded on the same...

Native Mobile Ads Are Coming to Reddit!

There is no doubt that paid advertising has become one of the most popular social media tools to businesses. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat all offer paid ads, which can be used both to raise brand awareness and get those all-important leads. And now Reddit is joining the party! On Wednesday, the content and discussion forum announced plans to introduce native ads to its mobile app. For those who aren’t familiar, native ads are ads that appear naturally on the platform. LinkedIn ads are a good example of this. Their ads appear either in the newsfeed or on the side bar, ensuring that...

Snapchat Has Changed Its Design- And Users Aren’t Happy!

If you have been on Snapchat recently, you may have noticed a change in the way the photo-sharing app looks. A new version began rolling out earlier this week and has seen a complete redesign. These changes have already received criticism from many users, probably because it is difficult to use and hard to find your favourite features. The most noticeable change to the app is the new Friends section which contains your received snaps, direct messages, group chats and Stories. Instead of ordering Stories chronologically, it now orders it by the people you snap most. This means that if they aren’t...

    Facebook Newsfeeds Are Changing……Again!

Anyone who uses social media, be it for business or personal use, will know just how much the platform changes. In the last year, we have seen the introduction of new camera features, stricter rules for fake news and more recently, adverts within Messenger. In its latest attempt to improve the service for users, Facebook is beginning to prioritise content from friends and family, over businesses. The social media giant wants to push content that sparks conversations, rather than pushing salesy content to users. In a post on his personal Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg said that he hopes the changes will “encourage meaningful social...

Google has recently announced an expansion of its automated extension facility. When a company is running a PPC (Pay Per Click) campaign, Google can now pull information like phone numbers directly from the website. A ‘call’ button can then be added to related search results. When someone searches for a related term on their smartphone, they can see that business appear in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page) then press the ‘call’ button to initiate a call right there and then. automated-extensiomsClicks on ‘call’ buttons and other functions work the same as links on...

Snapchat Begins Cracking Down on Explicit Content

If you have been paying attention to the news recently, you may have heard that social media sites have been in the firing line when it comes to explicit content. Facebook, Twitter and other social media giants are being called on by the UK Government to tackle this problem. On Monday, Snapchat made changes to its guidelines in an attempt to protect younger people using the app. The new guidelines will affect its Discover service, which is the section of the app for publishers. Cover images and tiles will no longer be allowed to contain sexualised content, such as photos containing nudity...

    Google’s New Local 4-Pack

This week, Jennifer Slegg of The SEM Post published an article discussing ads in Google’s local business listing results. SEOs in the US have been spotting another ad position between the Google Maps snippet and the current 3-pack listings. We know that Google has been experimenting with the 3-pack for a while now, and it looks as though it may be expanding to a 4-pack system. The current 3-pack displays local businesses beneath clearly defined ads followed by a cut out from Google Maps. For instance, a simple search for ‘watch repair Preston’ displays these results:   blog Continue Reading

    Snapchat confirm deal with Foursquare

After quite a lot of discussion, Snap Inc (the creators of Snapchat) has finally agreed to partner up with Foursquare. Together they will create better-targeted geofilters, so that people can use them wherever they are in the world. Snapchat will soon have access to Foursquare's map that has over 90 million locations when running geofilter campaigns - the colourful graphics that overlay Snapchat's images and videos. They will use Foursquare to power its location-based geo filters meaning that marketers can advertise at a much more precise location/audience. Even though Snapchat gave advertisers access to location data a year ago, that data wasn't very...

    Facebook May Stop Displaying Likes

    For years, likes on Facebook has been used as a very visible way of assessing public approval on pages. They’ve been displayed on your page for years, whether you’re a global celebrity, a local business or anything in between. But according to a recent blog on meetedgar.com, that might all be about to change. For many people using Facebook, the number of likes your page has is the most obvious way of measuring popularity and social approval. However, Facebook may stop this information from being displayed at all. There are a number of reasons why they might be considering this;

Twitter has become renowned for its short and snappy tweets. At the moment, if you want to post on the platform, you need to keep your message within the 140 character limit. According to recent reports, the social media company are considering dropping their iconic 140 character limit and allowing users to write up to 10,000 characters in their tweets. It is thought that this move would be an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, who might be put off by the character limit. Zuckerberg apparently thinks VR is 'really cool' and has expounded on the potential commercial / life benefits; visiting a doctor, watching a game, or studying remotely. Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday!

Well done Facebook for reaching 10, and being the biggest social network in the world, with over one billion active users (around a quarter of the world's population). 29 year old Mark Zuckerberg is rightly proud of his creation, which has become ubiquitous to the point where it is unusual not to have an account. Facebook has worked to stay fresh, including the pioneering adoption of mobile technology, with over 556 million people accessing the site via their phone or tablet on a daily basis. This focus on mobile Facebook advertising has paid off, leading to mobile ads producing over...

      Auto-play videos launched on Facebook

Facebook is to begin showing video advertisements on its news feeds, starting with adverts for the film Divergent. Some analysts believe that the introduction of the video advertisements will alienate users. An analyst with the research firm IDC, Alys Woodward, said “It sounds as if they are doing it in a reasonably sensitive way but if they get this stuff wrong people may stop being active and posting new content,” Alys went on to say “the question is do they have rich enough analytics to target ads correctly? It isn’t just about an ad for a film. I care about being sent...

The announcement came on Tuesday 15th October 2013 following an update to Twitter’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing. They will trade under the stock symbol TWTR. However, in May 2013, following a number of problems and technical glitches which resulted in investors not being able to trade, Nasdaq was fined $10m by the Securities and Exchange Commission. (Not provided) on organic keyword searches increase

Google has recently confirmed that it has started encrypting searches for users who are not signed in, along with those that are. This change could mean that in the future, all keyword data will be (not provided). Search encryption means that when a user types in keywords to find a website, the keywords are not picked up and passed to the site’s Analytics results, instead, a result of (not provided) would be seen. Google first announced in October 2011 that it was to begin search encryption but initially it only affected users who were signed in to their Google account. This quickly...

Smartphone tracking bins called to a stop by City of London

Following concerns raised by the privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch, a company that has recently installed ‘tracking devices’ into recycling bins in London to track the smartphones of people passing by has been asked by The City of London Corporation to stop. The company – Renew London – has installed the devices into 12 ‘pods’ in the capital. Facebook continues to be bolstered by mobile revenue

With Facebook audiences reaching an average of 1.1bn per month, figures released recently show that in the last quarter, Facebook’s revenue rose 38% year-on-year to reach $1.46bn (£938bn). This rise is based largely on its ability to monetise its mobile audience. In the three months up to 31st March 2013, advertising revenue reached $1.25bn (£803m), showing an increase of 30% on the same period last year. Mobile advertising accounted for approximately 30% of this revenue; however, the profit margin fell 10% during the same period to 26%. On-going investment in technology is a factor in the fall in profits, plus the acquisition...

Recent research has revealed that despite its premium cost, one in every five pounds (20.3%) spent on Facebook advertising now targets mobile users. The most offensive adverts of all time?

A recent list of the most complained-about adverts of all time, released by the UK’s advertising watchdog has shown some surprising results! The advertising watchdog has put together the adverts from the past fifty years that have gathered the most complaints, to coincide with its 50th anniversary. We would all be forgiven for expecting sex, swearing, animal cruelty or violence to provoke an outcry from viewers but we would be far off the mark in guessing what upset the viewers the most. Top of the list with a record 1,671 complaints is an advert for Kentucky Fried Chicken that was aired in 2005....

Beware the Pitfalls of Mobile Phone Advertising

A recent survey of over 2000 members of the British Public has revealed that for almost 65% of us, the mobile phone is the most unpopular device on which to receive uninvited advertising. Of the 2,054 people who completed the survey, the average person is registered to receive correspondence from around three or four of their preferred brands. Those in the 18yr – 24yr age range felt that receiving one marketing message a week was acceptable, however, the overall average felt that more than one message a month was deemed as too much. More importantly, over one in for of us...
