    Google’s June 2019 Core Update

On the 3rd June 2019, Google released an update to its core algorithm. There’s nothing news-worthy about minor Google updates (as the specific details of each update are never revealed). But what did these updates change? And how have these changes affected your website? Keep reading to learn the answers to these questions and more! Making it Official Google constantly releases...

    Domain Authority 2.0 Announced

Moz has announced the release of a major update to its domain strength metric, DA (or Domain Authority). For several years, domain authority has been a major influencing factor in the world of search engine optimisation. Since it had been used for many years in an ever-changing industry like digital marketing, the usefulness of DA 1.0 has waned. Now, Moz is introducing the 2.0 update, an exciting new iteration that represents a rebuild from the ground up. Despite its waning relevance, domain authority remains an indispensable metric throughout the industry. As such, the introduction of version 2.0 is sure to re-exert widespread influence...

    Video Marketing in 2019

In a recent blog post, SEO bigwig Moz made the prediction that video will dominate niche marketing in 2019. With featured videos, video carousels and suggested clips all dominating SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) for niche queries, it’s not hard to see why! Today’s online consumer demands content that’s both accessible and engaging. Videos tick both boxes in ways that other media can’t – that’s why online videos are such big business. What are Niche Searches? An online niche is exactly the same as a niche in the real world. That is, a specific and explicit search based on a service or...

Have you ever really liked someone’s Instagram post, whether it was delicious food or your bestie’s new outfit, and wanted to show others? Well, the platform’s newest feature may be of interest to you! The photo-sharing app, which has 800 million active monthly users, now allows you to reshare someone’s post in your Stories. Before now, if you wanted to use other people’s posts you would had to use unofficial methods, like screenshotting the post of using 3rd party resharing apps. At the moment, you can only reshare posts on your Stories and cannot do this on your Newsfeed posts. In a blog...

Are you tired of seeing certain people’s posts on Instagram but don’t want to block or unfollow them? Well, the platform’s new feature may be the perfect solution! Earlier this week, they announced that users will soon be able to mute people’s posts. This means that you will not longer see Stories or posts in your Newsfeed from the account you have muted. And the good news is that the other person will be none the wiser! To mute an account, you will need to tap the “…” which appears in the corner of the post. You will then be offered several different...

Instagram has quickly become one of the most popular social media networks in the world, with 800 million people using it each month. The feature can be used to ask your followers what they really think about something on your Stories, whether it’s how delicious your meal looks, or how much they like your new outfit. Did you know that in 2017, mobile accounted for 50.3% of all web traffic? With this in mind, it’s no wonder that internet companies are doing more and more to enhance the mobile experience. Last week, Google launched a brand new ‘More results’ Feature for mobile users. This comes just days after the search engine giant announced it was testing the feature, so this move isn’t unexpected. Instead of having to click page 2, 3 etc to get to the next set of results, you can now simply click on the ‘More results’ button. The results will be loaded on the same...

If you have ever used Instagram, you will know that it isn’t uncommon for them to add new features to the platform. The photo sharing app, which now has more 800 million monthly active users, is now rolling out a portrait mode called Focus. Native Mobile Ads Are Coming to Reddit!

There is no doubt that paid advertising has become one of the most popular social media tools to businesses. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat all offer paid ads, which can be used both to raise brand awareness and get those all-important leads. And now Reddit is joining the party! On Wednesday, the content and discussion forum announced plans to introduce native ads to its mobile app. For those who aren’t familiar, native ads are ads that appear naturally on the platform. LinkedIn ads are a good example of this. Their ads appear either in the newsfeed or on the side bar, ensuring that...

Snapchat Has Changed Its Design- And Users Aren’t Happy!

If you have been on Snapchat recently, you may have noticed a change in the way the photo-sharing app looks. A new version began rolling out earlier this week and has seen a complete redesign. These changes have already received criticism from many users, probably because it is difficult to use and hard to find your favourite features. The most noticeable change to the app is the new Friends section which contains your received snaps, direct messages, group chats and Stories. Instead of ordering Stories chronologically, it now orders it by the people you snap most. This means that if they aren’t...

In its latest attempt to improve the service for users, Facebook is beginning to prioritise content from friends and family, over businesses. The social media giant wants to push content that sparks conversations, rather than pushing salesy content to users. In an attempt to increase the popularity of Stories, Facebook has begun testing a new feature that allows you to share your Instagram Stories directly to Facebook. Since it was launched earlier this year, Facebook Stories has struggled to gain popularity. However, the same feature on Instagram is proving to be a success. The platforms, which are both owned by Facebook, hope that by allowing users to post Stories on both Instagram and Facebook simultaneously, they will convince more users to start using the feature. Once the new featured is rolled out, users will be given the option to share their photos and...

Companies often approach digital marketing agencies to improve their rankings on search engines like Google. But what does ‘ranking’ actually mean and how does Google calculate it? SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) describes the methods webmasters can use to give their sites the best chance of online success. This year marks the 70th anniversary of ENIAC, the world’s first programmable computer built for general-purpose use. In those early days, coding was done without tools or programming languages and relied purely on logic and equations to function. The programmers couldn’t use languages because they didn’t exist yet! The hardware was quite different from modern computers, too. ENIAC ran using vacuum tubes and required an enormous amount of electricity to run. Urban myth said that when the computer was turned on, the lights of Philadelphia dimmed in unison! At the time, ENIAC was housed in Philadelphia, PA as part of a project run...

The social media platform has added “Messenger Day”, which allows you to share parts of your day with your friends. The feature is very similar to Snapchat Stories, in the sense that you can add filters and effects to your photo. Like Snapchat, your message will also disappear from the site after 24 hours. Filters that are available include “who’s up for?” and ‘active now’ indicators, which will help users to find friends to connect and meet up...

Facebook Begins Testing a Dislike Button

Want to show your friends that you don’t like something on Facebook? You will be able to do this sooner than you think! The social media giant, which has 1.86 billion active users each month, has reportedly begun testing a dislike button on the platform. However, the feature will work differently to the Like button, which can be used on content whether it’s shared publicly or privately. The “thumbs down” button will only be available on Facebook’s Messenger service, at least for now. Users will be able to access the new feature by hovering over the small face that appears when you click...

      Is Snapchat Developing a Drone?

With 158 million people now using Snapchat each day, there’s no doubt that it’s become one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. But how are they going to keep all those people interested? Instead of just focusing on the photo-sharing app, the company is now expanding the brand into camera technology. Last year, they released Snapchat Spectacles, which are glasses that allow you to take photos and record videos from your point of view. They also changed their name from Snapchat to Snap, suggesting that they are much more than just a social media company. And now the company...

Google: SEO Results take ‘4 Months to a Year’

This week, Google released a new video called “How to Hire an SEO”. Holistic SEO In Google’s video, Maile Ohye highlights the importance of a holistic approach to SEO. She informs us that usually, SEOs require ‘four months to a year to help your business first implement improvements and then see potential benefit[s]’. Holistic SEO means creating great web pages that are useful and interesting – not simply tricking search engines via underhand tactics. 4 to 12 months might sound like a long time to see any ranking improvements, but it’s certainly true that an SEO campaign shouldn’t be undertaken lightly. The Long Game In her...

      Twitter Backtracks on Abuse Tool

Just two hours after releasing its new abuse tool, Twitter made a complete U-turn and removed it from the site. For a short time, the social network notified users when they are added to a list by other members. Lists are curated collections of Twitter accounts, such as your family members, friends, classmates or celebrities. The main aim of the new abuse tool was to help prevent bullying, which has become a serious problem for not only Twitter but Facebook and other social media sites as well. When you create a list on Twitter, you can add whoever you want to it which...

      Google’s Mobile-First Index

Late last year, Google announced a new mobile-first index was coming in 2017. When this comes into effect, Google will index mobile sites with greater frequency and give more weight to those with effective mobile search optimisation. Google’s mobile-first index follows mobile searches overtaking desktop searches for the first time last year. Users now search the internet using their smartphones and tablets more than their computers, so it makes sense that search engines want to accommodate that fact. What Does This Mean for Your Site? For unresponsive sites or mobile versions featuring limited content, this change could result in a substantial...

If you have been paying attention to the news recently, you may have heard that social media sites have been in the firing line when it comes to explicit content. On Monday, Snapchat made changes to its guidelines in an attempt to protect younger people using the app. The new guidelines will affect its Discover service, which is the section of the app for publishers. Google’s New Local 4-Pack

This week, Jennifer Slegg of The SEM Post published an article discussing ads in Google’s local business listing results. SEOs in the US have been spotting another ad position between the Google Maps snippet and the current 3-pack listings. We know that Google has been experimenting with the 3-pack for a while now, and it looks as though it may be expanding to a 4-pack system. The current 3-pack displays local businesses beneath clearly defined ads followed by a cut out from Google Maps. For instance, a simple search for ‘watch repair Preston’ displays these results:   blog Continue Reading

After quite a lot of discussion, Snap Inc (the creators of Snapchat) has finally agreed to partner up with Foursquare. Together they will create better-targeted geofilters, so that people can use them wherever they are in the world. Snapchat will soon have access to Foursquare's map that has over 90 million locations when running geofilter campaigns - the colourful graphics that overlay Snapchat's images and videos. They will use Foursquare to power its location-based geo filters meaning that marketers can advertise at a much more precise location/audience. More updates from Google!

Back in 2012, Google introduced Penguin as one of the 200 signals it uses in to determine web ranking. Now it’s updated Penguin into its latest incarnation, what does this mean for SEO? The original Google blog on the subject reassured us that SEO has always been a positive activity and one that it actively encourages in order to make the web as relevant to each end user as possible. Today, it’s no different. Google’s Gary Illyes told us in September that webmasters “should be free to focus on creating amazing, compelling websites” and that Penguin 4.0 will make it simpler...

      For years, likes on Facebook has been used as a very visible way of assessing public approval on pages. They’ve been displayed on your page for years, whether you’re a global celebrity, a local business or anything in between. But according to a recent blog on meetedgar.com, that might all be about to change. For many people using Facebook, the number of likes your page has is the most obvious way of measuring popularity and social approval. However, Facebook may stop this information from being displayed at all. There are a number of reasons why they might be considering this;

Twitter Stops Counting Usernames in Replies

Twitter is making yet another change to its character limit by no longer counting usernames in replies on the platform. It was just last month that the company also stopped counting photos, videos, GIFs and other types of media in the 140-character limit. One problem with the current setup is that if you are replying to a group of users, otherwise known as a “Twitter canoe”, you are left with less characters for your message. The latest changes will help to combat this so no matter how many people you are speaking to, you will still have 140 characters for your...

Messenger Lite will have all of the key features of the Messenger service, meaning that users will still be able to send messages, photos, videos, stickers and web links on the platform. If you have ever been on the social media platform Facebook, you may have noticed adverts showing up on your Timeline. New research from the UK government has found that two thirds of big businesses have been targeted by cyber attacks in the last year. For those who aren't familiar, Friends Reunited was one of the first social networks to appear in the UK. It was set up in 2000 and at its peak managed to attract 23 million people to the platform. Earlier this week, it was reported that the site will soon be closing down after it failed to keep with competing social media platforms, such as Facebook, which was released just 4 years later than Friends Reunited. The main purpose of the platform was to find friends who you may have lost touch with, such as school mates, colleagues and distant relatives. You could...

Millions of Internet Explorer Users ‘At Risk’

After announcing its plans in August, Microsoft has finally ended their tech support for those using outdated versions of its Internet Explorer browsers. The changes will affect Windows versions 8, 9 and 10 of the browser, which have now been around for many years. The older versions will still be available to use but they won't receive security updates, making them much more vulnerable to cyber-attacks and malicious spyware. It is estimated that 340 million people still use these versions and could be now be 'at risk' of hacks. Many experts are now predicting that a high number of attacks will happen...

        Twitter Considers Removing Character Limit

Twitter has become renowned for its short and snappy tweets. At the moment, if you want to post on the platform, you need to keep your message within the 140 character limit. It is thought that this move would be an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, who might be put off by the character limit. A recent study has revealed that tens of millions of people are accessing Google using a browser with malicious add-ons. The research was carried out by a team of security experts, who analysed more than 100 million visits to the search engine site. In the results, they found that around 5% of Google users were caught out by at least one malicious extension each day. These extensions weren’t limited to just Chrome but were actually present on all major browsers, which included Firefox and Internet Explorer. As well as repeatedly spamming users with adverts, bad extensions also pose a threat when it comes to...

Twitter Releases New Filter to Combat Abuse

Twitter has faced a lot of criticism over the past few months for its lack of control over abuse on the site. Even the company's CEO, Dick Costolo, said that they "suck at dealing with abuse." In an attempt to combat online bullying, Twitter will be introducing a new blocking feature called the 'quality filter.' It has been designed to remove abusive content by detecting any offensive language that is included in the tweet. The algorithm picks up on the word phrasing and context of the post, which the site then uses to decide whether or not it is inappropriate. This is not...

Google Loses Appeal for UK Privacy Court Case

Despite Google's efforts, UK consumers have been granted the right to take the search engine to court over privacy violations which occurred between 2011 and 2012. Safari Users Against Google's Secret Tracking claim that during this time, Google bypassed the security settings on Apple's Safari browser in order to track users. By doing this, they were able to gather information about the people using the site and then target them with personal advertisements. This group decided that they wanted to take the multi-billionaire company to court as they were doing this without the user's knowledge or consent. Because Google is an American company,...

Facebook Plans to Host News Stories on Its Site

With over 1.39 billion monthly users, there is no doubt that Facebook is the most popular social media site in the world. Many people use it to catch up with friends, upload pictures and find exciting new content to read. Facebook has recently approached a number of media outlets, including Buzzfeed, National Geographic and The New York Times, to see if they would be interested in hosting their content directly on the site. At the moment, users must click on a link and navigate away from Facebook if they want to read any of the stories shown on their news feed. The...

It’s Time To Say Goodbye To Internet Explorer!

Microsoft has announced that it will finally be axing its Internet Explorer browser. This has been a popular rumour over the past few months so it doesn’t come as too much of a shock to internet users. One of the main reasons for its downfall is that the browser has never been able to compete with the likes of Chrome and Firefox. At the moment, Google Chrome holds 62.5% of the browser market, compared to a poor 8% for Internet Explorer. Microsoft will be releasing a brand new browser to take its place. It will be released at the same as Windows...

Monika Bickert, who is Facebook's head of global policy, has said “While our policies and standards themselves are not changing, we have heard from people that it would be helpful to provide more clarity and examples, so we are doing so with today’s update.” The site will now ban and remove any content...

Twitter Clamps Down On ‘Revenge Porn’

If you keep up to date with the news, you will probably have noticed the increasing number of stories about our privacy and safety on social media platforms. Some people use these sites to send offensive comments and threats to other users, without ever facing any punishment. Even the CEO of Twitter, Dick Costolo, admitted that the site doesn’t have enough procedures in place to protect users from abuse online. When users share explicit content without the consent from the person who is shown in the photo or video, it is referred to as 'revenge porn.' On Wednesday, Twitter made several changes to...

Compared to the likes of Facebook and Twitter, Google + just doesn’t cut it in the world of social media. It currently has 540 million people using the site each month, compared to Facebook's 1.393 billion users. On Monday, the search giant confirmed that it would be splitting Google+ into two different service groups; Photos and Streams. Many people use the photos section of the site to back up and store their images. It also comes with a wide range of tools to edit the pictures, making it particularly popular with photographers. By breaking this section away from the rest of the site,...

Google to Boost Mobile-Friendly Websites in Search Results

Is your website mobile-friendly? If the answer is no, you could find yourself penalised on search engine results. From April 21st, Google will take into consideration the mobile-friendliness of website before deciding where they appear in terms of rankings. After this date, sites that can be accessed from different mobile devices will appear higher in search results than those that can't. In its announcement yesterday, Google said that the new changes will be applied to search results worldwide and will "have a significant impact" on the site. Millions of people were unable to access these sites for around 50 minutes, whilst programmers worked hard to resolve the problem. How well do your friends and family know you? Apparently the answer is; not that much!   According to a recent study, which was conducted at the Cambridge and Stanford University, Facebook knows you better than your family and friends. The researchers have been analysing the like function on the social media site, and seeing how it uses this information to get to know you. Over 86,000 people were asked to complete a survey which asked them a range of different questions.  They focused on the 5 main psychological attributes, which were agreeableness, conscientiousness, extroversion, neuroticism and openness. With videos appearing on Facebook more and more each day, it is no surprise that there is so much variation in content. Not all of these happen to be positive, with an increasing number of disturbing, shocking and sometimes violent videos being added to the site each day. The site has received enormous amounts of criticism for displaying these videos, with what seems to have very little regulation when it comes to violent videos. In the past, Facebook users have been subjected to videos of beheadings, shootings and other gruesome images. These can appear on your timeline if a friend has liked,...

The world's most popular social media site, Facebook, is thinking about adding a 'dislike' button feature. If you have used the site, you may have seen the fake posts which have been falsely advertising the feature, in order to get personal details and likes. The 'dislike' button has become one of the most sought after additions, but it is yet to be incorporated into the site. Facebook's main worry is that by adding this button will allow users to 'demean' each other, rather than using the site for positive interaction. Google’s Piracy Stance highlights legal sites, £1 at a time

Google has announced changes to its search engine in an attempt to curb on-line piracy. The search giant has been the centre of a piracy-controversy for some time due to their listings displaying quick and easy means of downloading pirated material. The on-going dispute has seen those within the entertainment industry argue that any sites which display illegal content should essentially be demoted from their position on Google. This stance would be designed to make it harder for people to find and download illegal pirated material. Measures have recently been introduced by the search giant which will see their search results display legal sites...

        It’s finally here, Penguin 3.0!

Last week, Google confirmed that they had updated their spam detecting software. For those of you that aren't aware of what Penguin is, it's an algorithm update which gives over-optimisers a slap on the wrist for misbehaving. These sites go against Google's publishing guidelines, using misleading or manipulative information to get you over to the site. The layout of the software means that you can only find out if you have followed Google's regulations by waiting to see the updated version’s feedback of the previous year. It is because of this that the Penguin 3.0 has kept publishers waiting in anticipation,...

Cheryl Cole, most dangerous internet celebrity?

If you have ever been caught out by internet viruses or spam, you'll know just how easy it is to click on the wrong thing. And it is not always easy to tell which content is riddled with malware and which is completely safe. McAfee, a leading computer protection company, has named Cheryl Cole as 'the most dangerous celebrity, when it comes to hidden viruses. With 15% of the content which contains her name being infected, it seems spies are using her success as a means of spreading the computer bugs. This study has been going on for over seven years...

        Ello, goodbye adverts!

Ello describes itself as a 'simple, beautiful, and ad-free social network' and is becoming one of the most currently spoken about companies. Whether it's down to the strict no ads and data approach, or the invite-only policy, internet users are keen to see what all the fuss is about. Created by Paul Budnitz, Ello was originally meant to host just 90 people, including himself and his friends. Since there has been an incredibly high demand to join the networking site, Paul has opened the site to the public and because of this it does seem that we will be waiting a...

With social media taking the world by storm, the majority of users will be all too familiar with the pages 'you may like' section. Whether these sorts of adverts intrigue or irritate you, it is clear that they do play a vital role in the everyday interaction that appears on the likes of Facebook and Twitter. Taboola is one of the leading providers of click-bait advertising, using short and catchy headlines to attract you to the content. Their stories appear on many popular news and gossip pages, alongside Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. From diet pill success stories...

        Google v Murdoch

Last week, Robert Thompson sent a letter of complaint to the European Commission, stating that Google is a 'platform for piracy and the spread of malicious networks.' The Chief Executive and his boss, Rupert Murdoch, have previously publicised their dislike of the company with regular social media posts over the past few years. In his letter, Thompson told the European Commissioner, Joaquin Almunia, 'your decision to reconsider Google's settlement offer comes at a crucial moment in the history of the free flow of information and of healthy media in Europe and beyond.' Here he is referring to the negotiations which took...

        Latest Google Panda Update Released

Google has recently announced that the latest version of its Panda Update has been released. The “slow roll-out” began earlier this week and was confirmed through a post on Google+. The Panda update is designed to penalise “thin” or poor content from ranking well and will affect around 3-5% of search queries worldwide. The update will take a little while to be completed and will probably continue into next week before search result fluctuations settle down. While previous Panda updates were bad news for many businesses, the latest update is set to let high quality small and medium-sized sites rank better. The...

        DuckDuckGo Blocked In China

The increasingly popular anonymous search engine DuckDuckGo has recently been blocked in China, according to recent user reports. The findings were confirmed by the search engines founder and CEO, Gabriel Weinberg. Checking which websites are blocked in China can be done by visiting the website GreatFire.org, which shows that the website has actually been blocked since the 4th of September. The blocking of the site was a surprise to many, with no official announcement or reason given. Bing and Yahoo are still accessible within China, but this is probably due to the fact that they both have servers based in China and...

Google has announced increased text content to those who are paying for their Adwords service. Announced in a recent blog post, an extra line of text will be available in pay per click campaigns, giving businesses more space to inform and draw in customers to their adverts. The examples given on the blog show adverts with extra text to entice customers to click with special offers, customer service, free delivery, price matching, or anything else which helps you stand out from your competitors. Will your posts be disappearing on Facebook?

Facebook has started experimenting with a timed post similar to the messaging app Snapchat, letting users set an expiration time on their posts. Time ranges from one hour through to a week and can be added to posts on the pilot function for its iOS app. This automatic deletion mimics the feature of Snapchats disappearing posts, letting users create posts which are only visible for a set period of time. This time-limited method has proved very popular – especially amongst teenagers – with Facebook reportedly trying to buy Snapchat for $3 billion after its huge growth over the last three years. Facebook is...

Continued Changes to Google Search Results

With subtle changes to things which we see every day, it can sometimes be difficult to see the transitions. Popular websites such as Google and Facebook have changed in a wide range of ways throughout their life spans. From complex coding changes which improve functionality through to overhauls of services and aesthetics, these changes rarely cause confusion and are almost always accepted with little attention being paid. Changes on Google are not noticed by most, with changes happening on a near weekly basis, but in the world of SEO and marketing, one such welcome addition has been recently removed. The addition of pictures...

If you are using an older version of your browser, you could find yourself looking at an outdated version of Google’s homepage and image search. This version lacks some of the more recent features and functions that the modern version of Google does, even displaying outdated copyright information at the bottom of the page. What appears on your Facebook feed is a matter of contention for most people, with different algorithms making up the news feed, there are a range of factors which can decrease its value. From Facebook themselves ‘deciding’ what you should see, adverts which have no relation to your interests, to posts which sometimes confuse and enrage when your satirical radar isn’t working it’s best, most would agree that improvements can be made. Most of us have come across satirical humour on-line in one way or another; some of us have even been fooled by an article that looks legitimate until we look closer at the sources. Recently, ‘The Onion’, a site dedicated to satirical humour, has been causing waves around the internet by having their articles shared on Facebook – causing confusion with users who are under the impression that they are reading an article written by a reputable news source. Google’s reward to secure websites – HTTPS encryption for better ranking

Google is now encouraging all webmasters to implement HTTPS encryption across whole websites, in order to reduce or prevent hacking. HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure and means that anything sent through this protocol is considered to be secure. The protocol provides an extra layer of protection and help to prevent hacking attempts on a website. The change in stance follows the ‘Heartbleed’ security bug which was discovered in April 2014 by Neel Mehta – one of Google’s own security team.  Heartbleed provided a back-door for hackers to exploit the HTTPS element of a website to gain access to private information...

M&S Website sales drop following new site launch

Marks and Spencer has reported a large drop in on-line sales after moving across to a new website. This goes to show that even the largest companies can get it wrong when it comes to e-commerce and upgrading systems. This story is a perfect example of why it is vital that great thought is put in to the processes involved with online shops; thinking from a customer viewpoint and not just the retailers. It is important for a site to look nice but more importantly, it has to be easy to navigate through, with categories easy to find and payment options...

Google unveils domain name registration service

Google has recently unveiled plans to launch their own domain registration service (DNS), which will allow customers to search, find, transfer and purchase domain names. Businesses are continuing to expand into the on-line marketplace and this move from Google offers another option for registration. This new service gives greater choice for those looking to register new websites and follows on from the move last year by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) who introduced around 1,400 generic top level domains. Although the service is only currently in the testing stages and is ‘invite only’, it will allow a small number...

Is your website in danger of becoming extinct?

With the increasing pace of technology, most websites now have a lifespan of just 3 to 5 years. Without regular updates and re-development, it is easy for a site to get left behind, losing potential business opportunities and sales. Many crucial elements of search marketing now, hadn’t even been thought about even just 3 years ago.

10 reasons your website could be an internet dinosaur:

        1. Your website is made entirely from flash. Flash sites are becoming very dated, even though some designs may look contemporary. Flash elements are detrimental to a website’s search rankings and websites which are built entirely in flash...

The “Right to be forgotten” law will be fresh in the mind of Google for quite some time

It was ruled yesterday by a top EU court that Google must amend some of its search results at the request of the every-day public in what is set to be a test of the "right to be forgotten" law – a law which states that "inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant" information about an individual must be deleted if the person the information is about was to request it. The test-case privacy ruling was originally made in Spain and was brought against Google Spain by a Spanish man known as Mario Costeja González.  Mr. González was unhappy that his name...

Facebook has announced the launch of its new Audience Network at the F8 developer’s conference this week. The new platform specifically caters for marketers who are selling goods through digital devices. Facebook will be sharing its users information with companies for them to be able to target the right adds to the appropriate buyer. This platform will also enable developers to add their own code, or work with Facebook’s team to place banner ads which will be stylised to integrate with the networks image. Google’s profits down

Despite reporting profits of $3.45bn (£2.05bn), the technology giant Google’s shares have dropped 5%. Speculations for why this has happened have led to some interesting conclusions. With Google’s recent branching out to developing drones, Google Glass and phones as well as thermostats and fire alarms, analyst Larry Magid has stated to the BBC: "Some of these crazy ideas need to become less crazy and more profitable. Their core business, what really brings in the money, that's beginning to get a little bit dodgy for them." The core business he refers to is Google's “cost per click” advertising facility, where companies or marketers...

A few things for businesses to think about following the latest Facebook redesign

Another update to the Facebook Timeline Page has been announced this week. Facebook officials insist that the new design has been streamlined further to enhance Pages, making it easier for users to find and use the tools they use most often, although some sceptics have suggested that it's because the old design was too advanced for most people's computers. One of the biggest changes that are being made is with the single column News Feed, so each update will appear as a continuous line. There have also been changes to the businesses ‘About’ section within the left hand column. This is...

Many Companies are asking: “Is SEO still relevant?”

The answer for any business whether new or established is “Yes”. Although the landscape has shifted it has mostly been to the benefit of creative SEO specialists who practice White Hat SEO who favour a long term strategy for long term security. Google has taken an aggressive approach against Black Hat link building tactics such as link spamming, poor content and bad designs which provide quick results, yet ultimately lose out by incurring penalties once they are registered in Google’s index. This is fair as poor work shouldn’t be rewarded in any industry. There are plenty of examples of websites...

At Piranha we have been performing on-site SEO on client’s sites for over a decade. Often sites will come to us with very fundamental issues, from an SEO perspective. It can often be the case that web design and development companies without SEO expertise can set up a website that looks impressive, on a superficial level but will, ultimately, not serve the purpose of attracting traffic, due to its inability to rank well in the Google search results. Google provides the average website with around 80% of its traffic, fulfilling the requirements outlined in Google’s Webmaster Guidelines should be a key...

In response to mounting political and public pressure, Google and Microsoft, two of the leading search engine companies, have both agreed measures which will make it much harder for users to find images online of child abuse. Google chief executive Eric Schmidt said “New software is to be introduced that will automatically block 100,000 “unambiguous” search terms which lead to illegal content,” The move, which has been welcomed by the Prime Minister, David Cameron, will see up to 100,000 searches which might find illegal material now return no results. In addition to this, the searches will trigger warnings to the user about...

        Facebook relaxes restrictions for teenagers

Facebook users aged 13 to 17 will now be able to add posts publicly on the site. Previously, anyone under the age of 18 using the social networking site was only allowed to share posts with ‘friends of friends’. This change will also see those users in the 13-17 year-old bracket being allocated a default setting of ‘friends’ only. Facebook said the latest changes to its settings for teenage users were in response to demands for the service and were designed to “improve the experience”. Allowing younger users to post publicly also brings Facebook in line with other social networking sites. Simon Miller,...

In the three months leading up to September, research group Gartner revealed a drop of 8.6 per cent in shipments in the last year, dropping to 80.3m units. (Not provided) on organic keyword searches increase

Google has recently confirmed that it has started encrypting searches for users who are not signed in, along with those that are. This change could mean that in the future, all keyword data will be (not provided). Search encryption means that when a user types in keywords to find a website, the keywords are not picked up and passed to the site’s Analytics results, instead, a result of (not provided) would be seen. Google first announced in October 2011 that it was to begin search encryption but initially it only affected users who were signed in to their Google account. This quickly...

The eagerly awaited iOS7 has been launched by Apple and is the system to be used by both tablet and mobile devices. There have been a number of small additions to the new system but the most significant change noticed by users is a switch to Bing within the Siri personal assistant system. Previously, Google was used to provide results. In addition to this move to Bing for searches, when users first open up the internet, they will now be prompted to change their default search engine to Bing; however, this is purely optional and doesn’t have to be accepted. However, not all users will be able to see the redesign yet. A spokeswoman for Google said that similar...

A recent study has found that the sense of well-being and the satisfaction with life of young adults can be reduced if they use Facebook. The research, carried out by the University of Michigan found that checking Facebook made people feel worse about both issues. It also revealed that the more people browsed, the worse they felt. The study followed the participants for two weeks and adds to the growing volume of research which says that Facebook can have negative psychological consequences. A spokesperson for the researchers said “On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic need for social...

Group member’s glitch prompts Facebook investigation

Facebook is investigating a glitch in their system which has resulted in some of its members being re-registered into groups that they have previously left. The group facility is promoted as a ‘private space’ which allows family, friends, pupils in a school class and co-workers to share polls, chat messages and updates between each other with the security that not only can those outside the group not see the messages, but the group members are kept ‘secret’ too. This glitch has raised concerns with administrators of some ‘secret’ groups that old members would be able to access ‘highly sensitive’ information, whilst Facebook...

Microsoft’s Bing, which is Google’s main rival, now has 5 % of the market share – the Windows 8 operating system, which was recently launched by Microsoft has Bing installed by default instead of Google. Ask has the third largest market share in the UK. Luca Paderni, an analyst from Forrester Research said “In the UK, Bing has been...

Following a check of 156 popular UK websites by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), it has been reported that more than a third of those could be breaking consumer laws. The OFT have found that of the 156 websites checked, 62 may not be complying fully with the consumer protection law. The checks revealed unreasonable restrictions on refunds being applied, along with compulsory charges being added at the online checkout without any prior warning or notification. According to the OFT, the most common problem that the checks uncovered was retailers telling customers that to obtain a refund, goods must be in...

Following an admission by Facebook that approximately 8.7% of its users aren’t actually ‘real’, independent data suggest that the social network has begun a purge of fake ‘likes’ across its pages. Pagedata has claimed that many of Facebook’s heavily ‘liked’ pages experienced an unexpected and unusual drop in numbers on Wednesday 26th September 2012. Texas Holdem Poker usually expects approximately 20,000 ‘likes’ each day, yet on Wednesday it saw a drop of over 96,000. Rihanna lost over 28,000 ‘likes’ along with Lady Gaga (34,326 down) and Eminem (15,420 down). When the BBC approached Facebook about this purge, the social network would not...

Changes to Twitter API anger developers

Twitter’s recent overhaul of its API (Application Programming Interface) and changes to Twitter’s rules sparked an angry reaction from developers and users of the social network site. The changes affect third-party applications. They mean that any new app aiming to serve over 100,000 users must get specific permission from Twitter before going ahead. If an app already has over 100,000 users then it is allowed to increase by 200% before it has to seek permission from Twitter to expand further. Although the changes will not have an immediate impact on users, developers were critical. They believe that the development of innovative products...

        Is Facebook Ready to Float?

Facebook, the social networking company, was thought to be working towards 17th May 2012 to float on the NASDAQ stock exchange after it lodged its initial public offering (IPO) documents in February of this year. However, with Facebook’s recent spending spree, it is rumoured that this highly anticipated arrival on Wall Street might not take place until June. It is thought that CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, has been focussing much of his time on his recent acquisitions and has left himself unprepared for its initial public offering.
