    Domain Authority 2.0 Announced

Moz has announced the release of a major update to its domain strength metric, DA (or Domain Authority). For several years, domain authority has been a major influencing factor in the world of search engine optimisation. Since it had been used for many years in an ever-changing industry like digital marketing, the usefulness of DA 1.0 has waned. Despite its waning relevance, domain authority remains an indispensable metric throughout the industry. As such, the introduction of version 2.0 is sure to re-exert widespread influence...

    Video Marketing in 2019

In a recent blog post, SEO bigwig Moz made the prediction that video will dominate niche marketing in 2019. With featured videos, video carousels and suggested clips all dominating SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) for niche queries, it’s not hard to see why! Today’s online consumer demands content that’s both accessible and engaging. Videos tick both boxes in ways that other media can’t – that’s why online videos are such big business. What are Niche Searches? An online niche is exactly the same as a niche in the real world. That is, a specific and explicit search based on a service or...

    Fresh Content & SEO

Content has become an increasingly key factor in the world of SEO. It’s easy to see why; Google’s very own Webmaster Guidelines advise website owners to ‘make pages primarily for users, not for search engines’ and to consider what makes their websites ‘unique, valuable or engaging.’ Content is the building blocks of all websites. It’s impossible to make your website individual and useful without it! But it’s not enough to simply fill up your site with page after page of meaningless words. Google emphasises the need to make your website useful to readers. This is done either by answering their questions,...

An m-dot web page is a version of a standard page, the configuration of which enables the optimal display for mobiles and tablets. You can tell if your web page is m-dot pages...

Google’s mobile-first index follows mobile searches overtaking desktop searches for the first time last year. Users now search the internet using their smartphones and tablets more than their computers, so it makes sense that search engines want to accommodate that fact. What Does This Mean for Your Site? Back in 2012, Google introduced Penguin as one of the 200 signals it uses in to determine web ranking. Now it’s updated Penguin into its latest incarnation, what does this mean for SEO? The original Google blog on the subject reassured us that SEO has always been a positive activity and one that it actively encourages in order to make the web as relevant to each end user as possible. Today, it’s no different. Google’s Gary Illyes told us in September that webmasters “should be free to focus on creating amazing, compelling websites” and that Penguin 4.0 will make it simpler...

Youtube is a video streaming service which is owned by the multibillionaire corporation, Google. It has become one of the most popular sites for uploading and watching videos online. Recent reports have suggested that the search engine company plans to launch the new subscription service at the end of the year. Users that sign up will be charged a subscription fee each month...

      Facebook Launches New Banning Guidelines

Facebook has released a new set of guidelines in an attempt to clear up confusion about what can and can't be posted on the site By updating the Community Standards section of the site, Facebook hopes to add "more detail and clarity on what is and is not allowed." Monika Bickert, who is Facebook's head of global policy, has said “While our policies and standards themselves are not changing, we have heard from people that it would be helpful to provide more clarity and examples, so we are doing so with today’s update.” The site will now ban and remove any content...

Google to Boost Mobile-Friendly Websites in Search Results

How Exactly Do Social Media Sites Use Our Data?

When it comes to using sites like Facebook and Twitter, do you know how they locate and use your data? It seems that the majority of users spend time on these platforms without actually knowing what information is being passed on, or how their privacy is dealt with. A recent report by the Commons Science and Technology Select Committee stated that these site's terms and conditions were too lengthy and complicated for users to understand. Instead of using straight forward terms, they use content which is similar to "engaging with Shakespeare." This report came after a number of complaints were filed against...

      Parliament Call For Google Break-Up

After receiving complaints that Google favour their own results, the European Parliament have called for change to how the search engine works. 384 members voted for the site being un-bundled, with just 174 voting against the motion. Google have become one of the most powerful companies in the world, which is what is worrying the members of parliament. Not only have they taken over the search engine industry but they also have huge shares in advertising, travel, mobile devices and social networks. This call for the company to be unbundled is an attempt to allow other companies to compete and contend,...

In order to access this feature, users will be required to add their credit or debit card, which will then permit them to make payments to any of their Facebook friends. The Advertising Standards Authority has announced the need for change when it comes to video blogging. They want it to be made clear when people are being paid for promoting a product in their videos. This comes after Newsround conducted an investigation into the Vlogging world. It found a few instances where people were paid to advertise Oreos biscuits, but there was no mention of it being an advertisement. The ASA will be cracking down on the companies making these payments, as well as those in the videos, if the correct acknowledgement is not given. They will need to mention somewhere, be...

Since its launch in 2011, Facebook Messenger has drawn in over 500 million users across the globe. This places it as one of the most popular apps in the entire world, falling just behind the likes of Twitter, Youtube and Google Maps. Facebook made changes to their messaging service in April which resulted in users being prompted to download the app in order to continue using it. This is undoubtedly linked to the dramatic increase in users, with the total number more than doubling during this 7 month period. The app has received a lot of criticism from its users as they...

Despite the increase in users, Twitter's investment shares have dropped. The recent report shows that although the company has increased its users by 23% since the last review, it has lost shares of 8-9%. The site has directed its focus heavily into mobile usage, with many of us using this method to connect rather than the standard computer access. It seems like potential shareholders are seeing Twitter's investment in existing advertising, rather than looking at new ways to engage audiences, as a risk that they aren't willing to take. With such a big following, it has become crucial for the site to...

This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page. Google’s Piracy Stance highlights legal sites, £1 at a time

Google has announced changes to its search engine in an attempt to curb on-line piracy. The search giant has been the centre of a piracy-controversy for some time due to their listings displaying quick and easy means of downloading pirated material. The on-going dispute has seen those within the entertainment industry argue that any sites which display illegal content should essentially be demoted from their position on Google. This stance would be designed to make it harder for people to find and download illegal pirated material. Measures have recently been introduced by the search giant which will see their search results display legal sites...

      It’s finally here, Penguin 3.0!

Last week, Google confirmed that they had updated their spam detecting software. For those of you that aren't aware of what Penguin is, it's an algorithm update which gives over-optimisers a slap on the wrist for misbehaving. These sites go against Google's publishing guidelines, using misleading or manipulative information to get you over to the site. The layout of the software means that you can only find out if you have followed Google's regulations by waiting to see the updated version’s feedback of the previous year. It is because of this that the Penguin 3.0 has kept publishers waiting in anticipation,...

Google has recently announced that the latest version of its Panda Update has been released. The “slow roll-out” began earlier this week and was confirmed through a post on Google+. The Panda update is designed to penalise “thin” or poor content from ranking well and will affect around 3-5% of search queries worldwide. The update will take a little while to be completed and will probably continue into next week before search result fluctuations settle down. While previous Panda updates were bad news for many businesses, the latest update is set to let high quality small and medium-sized sites rank better. The...

Continued Changes to Google Search Results

With subtle changes to things which we see every day, it can sometimes be difficult to see the transitions. Popular websites such as Google and Facebook have changed in a wide range of ways throughout their life spans. From complex coding changes which improve functionality through to overhauls of services and aesthetics, these changes rarely cause confusion and are almost always accepted with little attention being paid. Changes on Google are not noticed by most, with changes happening on a near weekly basis, but in the world of SEO and marketing, one such welcome addition has been recently removed. The addition of pictures...

A small step in the right direction for your Facebook news feed…..

What appears on your Facebook feed is a matter of contention for most people, with different algorithms making up the news feed, there are a range of factors which can decrease its value. From Facebook themselves ‘deciding’ what you should see, adverts which have no relation to your interests, to posts which sometimes confuse and enrage when your satirical radar isn’t working it’s best, most would agree that improvements can be made. One of the increasing recent trends is that of the ambiguously titled “click-bait” articles. If you have a look through your Facebook feed now, it probably won’t take too...

Google’s reward to secure websites – HTTPS encryption for better ranking

Google is now encouraging all webmasters to implement HTTPS encryption across whole websites, in order to reduce or prevent hacking. HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure and means that anything sent through this protocol is considered to be secure. The protocol provides an extra layer of protection and help to prevent hacking attempts on a website. The change in stance follows the ‘Heartbleed’ security bug which was discovered in April 2014 by Neel Mehta – one of Google’s own security team.  Heartbleed provided a back-door for hackers to exploit the HTTPS element of a website to gain access to private information...

Marks and Spencer has reported a large drop in on-line sales after moving across to a new website. This story is a perfect example of why it is vital that great thought is put in to the processes involved with online shops; thinking from a customer viewpoint and not just the retailers. Is your website in danger of becoming extinct?

With the increasing pace of technology, most websites now have a lifespan of just 3 to 5 years. Without regular updates and re-development, it is easy for a site to get left behind, losing potential business opportunities and sales. Many crucial elements of search marketing now, hadn’t even been thought about even just 3 years ago.

10 reasons your website could be an internet dinosaur:

      1. Your website is made entirely from flash. Flash sites are becoming very dated, even though some designs may look contemporary. Flash elements are detrimental to a website’s search rankings and websites which are built entirely in flash...

      Google’s profits down

Despite reporting profits of $3.45bn (£2.05bn), the technology giant Google’s shares have dropped 5%. Speculations for why this has happened have led to some interesting conclusions. With Google’s recent branching out to developing drones, Google Glass and phones as well as thermostats and fire alarms, analyst Larry Magid has stated to the BBC: "Some of these crazy ideas need to become less crazy and more profitable. Their core business, what really brings in the money, that's beginning to get a little bit dodgy for them." Another update to the Facebook Timeline Page has been announced this week. Facebook officials insist that the new design has been streamlined further to enhance Pages, making it easier for users to find and use the tools they use most often, although some sceptics have suggested that it's because the old design was too advanced for most people's computers. One of the biggest changes that are being made is with the single column News Feed, so each update will appear as a continuous line. There have also been changes to the businesses ‘About’ section within the left hand column. This is...

The answer for any business whether new or established is “Yes”. Although the landscape has shifted it has mostly been to the benefit of creative SEO specialists who practice White Hat SEO who favour a long term strategy for long term security. Google has taken an aggressive approach against Black Hat link building tactics such as link spamming, poor content and bad designs which provide quick results, yet ultimately lose out by incurring penalties once they are registered in Google’s index. This is fair as poor work shouldn’t be rewarded in any industry. There are plenty of examples of websites...

The website, set up in October 2011 following a Government-commissioned review into the sexualisation and commercialisation of childhood known as the Bailey Review, allows parents to find out about the standards that can be expected from the media and if required, share their views and make complaints. Unfortunately, a year on from the Bailey View releasing its findings, the research discovered that nearly 90% of parents still think that there are problems with the way...

Consumers find Social media advertising least acceptable

A recent study of 2,000 consumers has revealed that social media is the least acceptable media channel for advertisers. Of the 2,000 consumers polled, only a third (37%) said they were happy to see advertisements on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter – the lowest total for any media. A fifth of the respondents (20%) said they were ‘unhappy’ when faced with adverts on social media sites. The study also revealed that print and magazine advertising remains the most welcome channel of ads with 52% saying they are happy to see them and only 10% unhappy. Television and retail websites...

Complaints triple as charities turn to email fundraising

Charities are facing the risk of alienating supporters as complaints from email fundraising communications rose by a huge 282% last year, a recent report has revealed. Charities are moving over from the direct mail approach to email campaigns in a bid to reduce costs and target a more specific audience but the poor use of data in their campaigns is proving unpopular with supporters. The Fundraising Standards Board felt that the increase in complaints was out of proportion to the 25% increase in the volume of fundraising emails sent and says the complaints “form a telling picture of those issues that disengage...

      OFT warns affiliate marketers

Companies running affiliate marketing programmes have been warned by the consumer protection watchdog that they must punish affiliates carrying promotions which are misleading, otherwise they will face legal action. MoreNiche, which runs a network of online shops and affiliates marketing and selling a variety of products including teeth whitening and diet aids, is one of the companies that the Office of Fair Trading has taken action against after affiliates were discovered to be using paid-for commercial promotions and passing them off as independent customer reviews. The Office of Fair Trading also added that some affiliates’ sites failed to make it clear that...

New Rules for the Marketing and Advertising of Alcohol Across EU

Eight of Europe’s largest drinks manufacturers have joined together and agreed to implement rules on the marketing of alcohol which will be used right across the continent. Working alongside the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) and the national trade association, Pernod Ricard, Carlsberg, Bacardi, Heineken, AB InBev, Brown-Forman SAB Miller and Diageo will look to create and enforce advertising which is age appropriate and common standards on social media marketing across the member states. Following concerns that current standards were fragmented, pressure from the European Alcohol Health Forum (EAHF) – the European Commission’s initiative in alcohol harm reduction – has led to...

Marketing Budgets Lagging as Marketers’ Confidence Increases

Despite the latest news that the UK has fallen into a double-dip recession, a recent survey has revealed that the confidence of marketers in their own company’s prospects has reached a two year high. The study questioned 300 senior marketers and almost 40% of those polled said that they were more optimistic about their company’s prospects than they had been towards the end of 2011. This almost doubled the amount that felt more pessimistic than they had last year. This uplift in optimism has unfortunately not been reflected in the marketing budgets available, with an unexceptional increase seen in the first quarter...

      Digital Revenue vs Print Revenue

Forecasters from a leading media agency are predicting that the amount of money spent on digital advertising will, for the first time next year, outstrip print revenues from newspapers. Initial forecasts for 2013 predict that the global advertising market will increase by around 5.8% for print and digital combined, only a fraction below the forecast of a 6% growth for 2012. Despite increases due to the London Olympics and the presidential election in the United States, since August, one of the largest agencies worldwide (by spending), Carat, has reduced its forecast for the growth of the European media market this year to...

Increase Marketing Spend in Lean Times

It is a well known fact that “companies that invest in marketing during a recession” are more likely to survive, and those that do are also more likely to win market share when the good years return. A great deal of evidence suggests that it’s not a good idea to reduce marketing spend during a recession in order to hit financial targets. Doing so may leave your brand in a less competitive position when the economy recovers. Over the years, research studies have confirmed that the best strategy in terms of long-term ROI is to increase marketing expenditure during an economic...
