    Google+ to Shut Down

Google has confirmed its decision to shut down its struggling social network, Google+. The search engine first announced the move back in December 2018, citing among its reasons “low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers’ expectations.” Google+ is now due to shut down for consumers on 2nd April 2019. A Brief History of Google Plus Google+ was launched way back in 2011 and is Google’s fourth foray into the world of social networking. The network grew substantially over its first couple of years, and by 2015 had amassed an active user base numbering 111 million people. Although...

Have you ever really liked someone’s Instagram post, whether it was delicious food or your bestie’s new outfit, and wanted to show others? Well, the platform’s newest feature may be of interest to you! The photo-sharing app, which has 800 million active monthly users, now allows you to reshare someone’s post in your Stories. Before now, if you wanted to use other people’s posts you would had to use unofficial methods, like screenshotting the post of using 3rd party resharing apps. At the moment, you can only reshare posts on your Stories and cannot do this on your Newsfeed posts. In a blog...

    Instagram Introduces Mute Button

Are you tired of seeing certain people’s posts on Instagram but don’t want to block or unfollow them? Well, the platform’s new feature may be the perfect solution! Earlier this week, they announced that users will soon be able to mute people’s posts. This means that you will not longer see Stories or posts in your Newsfeed from the account you have muted. And the good news is that the other person will be none the wiser! To mute an account, you will need to tap the “…” which appears in the corner of the post. You will then be offered several different...

    Instagram Introduces Emoji Slider

Instagram has quickly become one of the most popular social media networks in the world, with 800 million people using it each month. The photo sharing app has just introduced a brand-new feature to the platform; the Emoji Slider. The feature can be used to ask your followers what they really think about something on your Stories, whether it’s how delicious your meal looks, or how much they like your new outfit. Instead of getting a simple yes or no response, people can now give their answer by dragging the slider left or right until they find the most appropriate emoji on the...

    Instagram Launches New ‘Focus’ Feature

If you have ever used Instagram, you will know that it isn’t uncommon for them to add new features to the platform. In the past couple of years, one of its most noticeable new features was ‘Stories’, which allows users to post a selection of photos which disappear after 24 hours. The photo sharing app, which now has more 800 million monthly active users, is now rolling out a portrait mode called Focus. Focus, to put it simply, blurs out the background and puts focus on the person or group of people in the photo. This can turn your casual selfie into...

Native Mobile Ads Are Coming to Reddit!

There is no doubt that paid advertising has become one of the most popular social media tools to businesses. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat all offer paid ads, which can be used both to raise brand awareness and get those all-important leads. And now Reddit is joining the party! On Wednesday, the content and discussion forum announced plans to introduce native ads to its mobile app. For those who aren’t familiar, native ads are ads that appear naturally on the platform. LinkedIn ads are a good example of this. Their ads appear either in the newsfeed or on the side bar, ensuring that...

Snapchat Has Changed Its Design- And Users Aren’t Happy!

If you have been on Snapchat recently, you may have noticed a change in the way the photo-sharing app looks. A new version began rolling out earlier this week and has seen a complete redesign. These changes have already received criticism from many users, probably because it is difficult to use and hard to find your favourite features. The most noticeable change to the app is the new Friends section which contains your received snaps, direct messages, group chats and Stories. Instead of ordering Stories chronologically, it now orders it by the people you snap most. This means that if they aren’t...

In the last year, we have seen the introduction of new camera features, stricter rules for fake news and more recently, adverts within Messenger. In its latest attempt to improve the service for users, Facebook is beginning to prioritise content from friends and family, over businesses. The social media giant wants to push content that sparks conversations, rather than pushing salesy content to users. In a post on his personal Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg said that he hopes the changes will “encourage meaningful social...

Instagram sharing Stories onto Facebook – Will it Work?

In an attempt to increase the popularity of Stories, Facebook has begun testing a new feature that allows you to share your Instagram Stories directly to Facebook. Since it was launched earlier this year, Facebook Stories has struggled to gain popularity. However, the same feature on Instagram is proving to be a success. The platforms, which are both owned by Facebook, hope that by allowing users to post Stories on both Instagram and Facebook simultaneously, they will convince more users to start using the feature. Once the new featured is rolled out, users will be given the option to share their photos and...

        Vine is being killed off

We here at Piranha love social media. After all, it is the driving force behind a great company’s online presence, and so can never be valued enough. So, when one of these platforms gets the plug pulled, it’s a sad day for us all. The victim this time is Vine and you wouldn’t be blamed for feeling rather surprised at this news. This time last year Vine had 200 million active users a month, which begs the question; ‘What happened to Vine?’ In short, nothing happened. Vine was and still is doing great and will still be doing great on its very...

Twitter Stops Counting Usernames in Replies

Twitter is making yet another change to its character limit by no longer counting usernames in replies on the platform. It was just last month that the company also stopped counting photos, videos, GIFs and other types of media in the 140-character limit. One problem with the current setup is that if you are replying to a group of users, otherwise known as a “Twitter canoe”, you are left with less characters for your message. The latest changes will help to combat this so no matter how many people you are speaking to, you will still have 140 characters for your...

        Facebook Rolls Out Workplace Platform

This week, social media giant Facebook has released its very own workplace platform. Using Facebook at Work, colleagues will be able to communicate, live stream important events and share ideas internally. These accounts will be kept completely separate from your personal account, so you don’t have to worry about your colleagues seeing your photos and posts. The company will also be rolling out “Multi-Company Groups” in the coming weeks, which will allow users to collaborate with other businesses. In a blog post, Facebook said; “We’ve brought the best of Facebook to the workplace — whether it’s basic infrastructure such as News Feed, or...

Facebook Slims Down Messenger for Old Phones

This week, social media giant Facebook announced plans to release a “slimmed down” version of its Messenger app. This will be made available to people living in countries where old handsets and slow connection speeds are common. Messenger Lite will have all of the key features of the Messenger service, meaning that users will still be able to send messages, photos, videos, stickers and web links on the platform. One of the main problems with the current Messenger app is that older phones struggle to run it as they have less storage and are typically less powerful. Facebook hopes that by releasing...

        Facebook Overestimates Video Usage

With more than 1.7 billion people using the platform each month, Facebook is undoubtedly the most popular social media site in the world. But recently the company has been getting attention for all of the wrong reasons after admitting that they had overestimated how much video content is being watched on the platform. Over the past 2 years, Facebook has been artificially inflating figures for the average time people spend watching videos as they hadn’t actually been counting all of those watching for less than 3 seconds. In a post on the Advertiser Help Centre, the Facebook team said; We had previously *defined*...

        Twitter Expands Character Limit

The day that we have all been waiting for is finally here! Twitter has expanded its character limit and will no longer count photos, videos, GIFs and quoted tweets. The character count will no longer be affected when attaching these types of media, meaning that you have more space to say what you want.  Before now, 24 characters would be automatically deducted from the limit when adding these types of media to posts. Another great thing about the recent changes is that when you reply to a tweet with @username, this won’t be included in your character limit either! Embedded photos and videos,...

Instagram Launches Feature to Tackle Abuse

Facebook-owned Instagram has launched a brand new feature that automatically deletes abusive comments. The filter allows users to identify keywords and phrases that they find inappropriate or abusive, and the app will then hide any comments containing these. This feature has been rolled out with the most recent update to the app so most users should now be able to take advantage of it when using the platform. To start using the anti-abuse filter, you will need to switch on the “hide inappropriate comments” option in your settings and by default, it will use Instagram’s own abusive keyword list. You can then add to...

Just last week, Instagram added a feature which allows you to pinch and zoom into photos on the platform and it seems that they are now making even more changes. Mashable, which is a popular tech news website, has said that the company now plans to remove maps from the social media site. Before now, users could add a location to posts which would let their followers know exactly where the picture was taken. Instagram has started to remove this feature already and many are no longer able to see the map with other people’s photo locations. However, you may still be able...

Have you ever experienced abuse on social media platforms like Twitter? The unfortunate truth is that many of us have at some point or other. The company is more than aware of this problem which is why they are trying to take extra steps to protect users. In its latest attempt to tackle these online trolls, the company has rolled out two new features which give users more control over who they speak to and interact with on the platform. If you have ever been on the social media platform Facebook, you may have noticed adverts showing up on your Timeline. This can be annoying, especially if they are irrelevant or appear too much, so it is no wonder that millions of people are choosing to use ad blocking software. In an attempt to combat this, the company has made changes that will force users accessing Facebook through their desktop into seeing the ads, even if they have ad blocking software installed. Facebook gets the majority of its revenue from advertising, with £4.7bn being made in the most recent quarter alone. If people...

This week, Facebook began rolling out a new update that will crack down on clickbait news stories that are posted on the platform. If you aren’t sure what they are, clickbait stories often use misleading headlines to grab the reader’s attention, making out that there is more to the story than there actually is. Phrases like ‘you’ll never guess what happened next’, “this trick will change your life” and “the shocking truth about…” are all popular in the world of clickbait articles. It seems that Twitter is still struggling to keep up with their competitors as this week the social media platform has reported its slowest quarterly revenue growth in 3 years. In the second quarter of 2016, revenue increased by 20% to $602m which is a disappointing result compared to the same quarter last year, where it saw a 61% leap. However, the site, which draws in 310 million users each month, managed to reduce their losses during the 3-month period to $107m from the $136m reported in 2015. Twitter Are Increasing the Character Limit for Direct Messages

Twitter has become well known for its limited characters when posting online. The social media platform, which has 302 million active users each month, has announced that it will be increasing the number of characters you can use in direct messages. Before now, users could only send a private message of up to 140 characters on the site. If users weren't able to fit what they wanted to say into the character limit, they would have to split it into several different messages. When these changes are rolled out, users will be able to send a message of up to...

        Facebook Testing Search Engine Feature

Facebook has recently started testing their own search engine feature, which will allow users to find content without leaving the site. Some iOS users will now see an option to "add a link", which lets them search for keywords and find relevant content to share. These users can also include a description in the status update to let their friends know what the story is about. This new feature means that instead of users having to copy and paste the URL into their status update, they will be able to click and share directly from the Facebook mobile app. The search engine will...

Twitter’s Share Price Drops By 24%

Last week, Twitter lost 24% of its market worth, which is equal to $8bn. This drop came after leaked Tweets revealed the company's quarterly results had not met expectations. Selerity, an independent company that crawls websites for financial data and information, leaked the figures. They posted the early announcement on Twitter's investor-relations page. The results showed that Twitter’s new advertising feature received much less interest than expected. Over the past few months, Twitter has been encouraging users to invest in their advertising service in a bid to boost their profits. Investors are not only concerned with the slowing user growth but also the...

On Tuesday, Facebook announced that it will be making changes to the content shown on the social media platform. The updated algorithm will control which posts, photos and videos are shown in a user's News Feeds. It will decide what content to show you by looking at the profiles you  visit and who you speak to most on the site. Instagram Updates Nudity Policies

Instagram has quickly become one of the most popular picture sharing apps in the world. Each month it has around 300 million active users, which puts it well ahead of its competitor, Twitter. The social media app has recently updated it's community guidelines to give more detail on the types of nudity that can be posted. In the past, Instagram has received criticism for removing images of women breastfeeding and mastectomy scars. Following these changes, users will no longer be able to post images of "sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully nude buttocks." It also states that...

Twitter has faced a lot of criticism over the past few months for its lack of control over abuse on the site. Even the company's CEO, Dick Costolo, said that they "suck at dealing with abuse." In an attempt to combat online bullying, Twitter will be introducing a new blocking feature called the 'quality filter.' Over 86,000 people were asked to complete a survey which asked them a range of different questions.  They focused on the 5 main psychological attributes, which were agreeableness, conscientiousness, extroversion, neuroticism and openness. In the coming weeks, Twitter will be simplifying the way we can report abuse and block users.  Twitter hopes this will reduce the cases of bullying and harassment which are taking place on the site, after reports of a high number being reported over the past few years. When it comes to using sites like Facebook and Twitter, do you know how they locate and use your data? This is undoubtedly linked to the dramatic increase in users, with the total number more than doubling during this 7 month period. The app has received a lot of criticism from its users as they...

Study reveals Facebook’s most common scams

A study, which has been observing Facebook Users over the past two years, has found that over 850,000 scams have targeted the social media site. The scams share similar traits, so we can look for common warning signs before clicking on any unfamiliar link. They promise users exclusive content and freebies in an attempt to get them to click. These are filled with threats and viruses which can harm and damage your computer. The first one and most common one is the 'find out who has been looking at your profile' scam. People may be curious to find out if an ex,...

Twitter shares fall in quarterly review

Despite the increase in users, Twitter's investment shares have dropped. The recent report shows that although the company has increased its users by 23% since the last review, it has lost shares of 8-9%. The site has directed its focus heavily into mobile usage, with many of us using this method to connect rather than the standard computer access. It seems like potential shareholders are seeing Twitter's investment in existing advertising, rather than looking at new ways to engage audiences, as a risk that they aren't willing to take. With such a big following, it has become crucial for the site to...

        Facebook Say No to Like-Gating

Facebook have recently made changes to their site, with banning the use of Like-Gating by businesses at the top of their list. They have said that users 'must not incentivize people to use social plugins or to like a Page. This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page. It remains acceptable to incentivize people to login to your app, check-in at a place or enter a promotion on your app's Page.' This means that the pages which use the social platform for merely their own gain will be...

        Ello, goodbye adverts!

Ello describes itself as a 'simple, beautiful, and ad-free social network' and is becoming one of the most currently spoken about companies. Whether it's down to the strict no ads and data approach, or the invite-only policy, internet users are keen to see what all the fuss is about. Created by Paul Budnitz, Ello was originally meant to host just 90 people, including himself and his friends. Since there has been an incredibly high demand to join the networking site, Paul has opened the site to the public and because of this it does seem that we will be waiting a...

Will your posts be disappearing on Facebook?

Facebook has started experimenting with a timed post similar to the messaging app Snapchat, letting users set an expiration time on their posts. Time ranges from one hour through to a week and can be added to posts on the pilot function for its iOS app. This automatic deletion mimics the feature of Snapchats disappearing posts, letting users create posts which are only visible for a set period of time. This time-limited method has proved very popular – especially amongst teenagers – with Facebook reportedly trying to buy Snapchat for $3 billion after its huge growth over the last three years. Facebook is...

A small step in the right direction for your Facebook news feed…..

What appears on your Facebook feed is a matter of contention for most people, with different algorithms making up the news feed, there are a range of factors which can decrease its value. From Facebook themselves ‘deciding’ what you should see, adverts which have no relation to your interests, to posts which sometimes confuse and enrage when your satirical radar isn’t working it’s best, most would agree that improvements can be made. Is your website in danger of becoming extinct?

With the increasing pace of technology, most websites now have a lifespan of just 3 to 5 years. 10 reasons your website could be an internet dinosaur:

        1. Your website is made entirely from flash. Flash sites are becoming very dated, even though some designs may look contemporary. Flash elements are detrimental to a website’s search rankings and websites which are built entirely in flash...

Another update to the Facebook Timeline Page has been announced this week. Facebook officials insist that the new design has been streamlined further to enhance Pages, making it easier for users to find and use the tools they use most often, although some sceptics have suggested that it's because the old design was too advanced for most people's computers. One of the biggest changes that are being made is with the single column News Feed, so each update will appear as a continuous line. There have also been changes to the businesses ‘About’ section within the left hand column. This is...

Many Companies are asking: “Is SEO still relevant?”

The answer for any business whether new or established is “Yes”. Although the landscape has shifted it has mostly been to the benefit of creative SEO specialists who practice White Hat SEO who favour a long term strategy for long term security. Google has taken an aggressive approach against Black Hat link building tactics such as link spamming, poor content and bad designs which provide quick results, yet ultimately lose out by incurring penalties once they are registered in Google’s index. This is fair as poor work shouldn’t be rewarded in any industry. There are plenty of examples of websites...

With Facebook audiences reaching an average of 1.1bn per month, figures released recently show that in the last quarter, Facebook’s revenue rose 38% year-on-year to reach $1.46bn (£938bn). This rise is based largely on its ability to monetise its mobile audience. In the three months up to 31st March 2013, advertising revenue reached $1.25bn (£803m), showing an increase of 30% on the same period last year. Mobile advertising accounted for approximately 30% of this revenue; however, the profit margin fell 10% during the same period to 26%. On-going investment in technology is a factor in the fall in profits, plus the acquisition...

20% of Facebook ad spend goes on mobile users

Recent research has revealed that despite its premium cost, one in every five pounds (20.3%) spent on Facebook advertising now targets mobile users. The claims were made after research was carried out by one of Facebook’s strategic preferred marketing developers, media agency Kenshoo Social and followed analysis of more than 2m Facebook ad clicks and conversions by global advertisers. Kenshoo CMO Aaron Goldman says “The world’s top brands have embraced Facebook mobile advertising and we expect the channel to become increasingly competitive as new devices, like those on display at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, deliver enhanced interactive experiences.” Further analysis of...

        Search returns bolstered by Twitter

Following an overhaul of its mobile properties, twitter is rolling out search functionality improvements which allow users to find historical posts on the network. Until now, Twitter’s returns only showed tweets posted within the last seven days but once the updates are in place, users will be able to find posts dating back longer than a week. According to Paul Burstein, search infrastructure engineer at Twitter, these updates will be rolled out over the next few days, with Twitter using a variety of methods to prioritise search results. “We look at a variety of types of engagement, like favourites, retweets and clicks, to...

LinkedIn, the primarily business-focused social networking site, announced that the profits for the fourth quarter were $40.2m (£25.5m), double the amount that those watching the company had expected. Group member’s glitch prompts Facebook investigation

Facebook is investigating a glitch in their system which has resulted in some of its members being re-registered into groups that they have previously left. The group facility is promoted as a ‘private space’ which allows family, friends, pupils in a school class and co-workers to share polls, chat messages and updates between each other with the security that not only can those outside the group not see the messages, but the group members are kept ‘secret’ too. This glitch has raised concerns with administrators of some ‘secret’ groups that old members would be able to access ‘highly sensitive’ information, whilst Facebook...

        Is Facebook purging fake ‘likes’?

Following an admission by Facebook that approximately 8.7% of its users aren’t actually ‘real’, independent data suggest that the social network has begun a purge of fake ‘likes’ across its pages. Pagedata has claimed that many of Facebook’s heavily ‘liked’ pages experienced an unexpected and unusual drop in numbers on Wednesday 26th September 2012. Texas Holdem Poker usually expects approximately 20,000 ‘likes’ each day, yet on Wednesday it saw a drop of over 96,000. Rihanna lost over 28,000 ‘likes’ along with Lady Gaga (34,326 down) and Eminem (15,420 down). When the BBC approached Facebook about this purge, the social network would not...

Changes to Twitter API anger developers

Twitter’s recent overhaul of its API (Application Programming Interface) and changes to Twitter’s rules sparked an angry reaction from developers and users of the social network site. The changes affect third-party applications. They mean that any new app aiming to serve over 100,000 users must get specific permission from Twitter before going ahead. If an app already has over 100,000 users then it is allowed to increase by 200% before it has to seek permission from Twitter to expand further. Although the changes will not have an immediate impact on users, developers were critical. They believe that the development of innovative products...

        Twitter advertising campaign banned

Following a ruling by the Advertising Standards Authority, the UK’s advertising watchdog, a Twitter advertising campaign by Nike has been banned. The ruling came about after just one complaint was received about two tweets posted by Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney and Arsenal player Jack Wilshire in January 2012. The tweets were posted at the request of the sportswear giant Nike. The tweet from Jack Wilshire read “in 2012, I will come back for my club – and be ready for my country gonike.me/makeitcount”. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney – who has almost 4.8 million followers – posted “My resolution – to start the year...

        Is Facebook Ready to Float?

Facebook, the social networking company, was thought to be working towards 17th May 2012 to float on the NASDAQ stock exchange after it lodged its initial public offering (IPO) documents in February of this year. However, with Facebook’s recent spending spree, it is rumoured that this highly anticipated arrival on Wall Street might not take place until June. It is thought that CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, has been focussing much of his time on his recent acquisitions and has left himself unprepared for its initial public offering. Earlier this month, Facebook agreed to buy Instagram, the photo-sharing service,...
