    Domain Authority 2.0 Announced

Moz has announced the release of a major update to its domain strength metric, DA (or Domain Authority). For several years, domain authority has been a major influencing factor in the world of search engine optimisation. Since it had been used for many years in an ever-changing industry like digital marketing, the usefulness of DA 1.0 has waned. Now, Moz is introducing the 2.0 update, an exciting new iteration that represents a rebuild from the ground up. Despite its waning relevance, domain authority remains an indispensable metric throughout the industry. As such, the introduction of version 2.0 is sure to re-exert widespread influence...

    Google Testing Local Panel Ads

Google is testing displaying shopping ads in local panel search results. This means that users, when searching for specific stores, will be shown a search bar labelled ‘Search this store’ above a carousel of related shopping ads. The search bar can then be used to find products or services, whilst the ads will take searchers directly to the relevant web pages. What is the Local Panel? A local panel is a set of results that is shown when searching for a specific store, usually displaying the closest chain store to the searcher’s geographical location. Local panel results include the store’s:

Google Tests Auto-Play Videos in Search

It looks as though Google is testing auto-play videos in its SERPs. Users in North America have experienced videos loading and auto-playing on the right-hand column of search results. They’ve been particularly noticeable on movie-related searches. Although the Piranha team has been unable to replicate this in Google’s UK desktop search engine, auto-play videos have been spotted in the US and Canada. Updates of this kind usually roll out across the UK and Europe within a couple of weeks of North American testing. The SEM Post’s Jennifer Slegg posted this week when she first encountered the test. She pointed out that many...

      Google Compressing Display Ads

In a new blog post, Google confirmed it is using a new compression algorithm (named Brotli) to make its Display Ads load faster. As far back as 2010, Google announced that speed was a core ranking signal. Since then, speed has remained a top priority and Google now expects web pages to load within 2 seconds. This target is designed to safeguard user experience as pages load tasks quickly. Google’s latest announcement tells us that Display Ads are being compressed to make them load faster across all devices. What is Google SSL and what does it mean for your website?

      Google SSL

Throughout 2017, Google Chrome will begin labelling non-SSL sites as security risks. This development will be extremely important to our clients, and in this article, we will explain why.

      What is SSL?

SSL is a type of software that creates an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This encryption prevents data from being intercepted between your computer and the website’s server. In the past, this technology was only really used on ecommerce sites where sensitive information (like bank card details) was passed between the visitor and the site. However, Google has been moving towards a more secure...

Facebook To Include Ads Within Videos

This week, tech news company Recode reported that Facebook will soon be introducing mid-roll video ads to the platform. Unlike YouTube which features skippable ads at the start of videos, Facebook will allow advertisers to insert an ad 20 seconds into a video, providing it is at least 90 seconds long. It is expected that this will change the way user activity is tracked, giving advertisers and businesses a better understanding of who is watching their ads. This insight into customers will hopefully give people the information that they need to create successful ads, which is not only good for them but also...

Ad blocking software is the biggest cause for concern for online video streaming services, like YouTube, ITV Player and All 4. This tool allows users to skip the adverts that are placed before and sometimes throughout the videos and skip straight to the content that they want to see. According a report by the BBC, advertising revenue supports 90% of all content that we see online. If the number of people using ad blocking software increases, we could see stricter regulations enforced or even have to pay for our favourite online services. It's not only television companies that rely on advertising; social...
