Domain Authority 2.0 Announced

Moz has announced the release of a major update to its domain strength metric, DA (or Domain Authority). For several years, domain authority has been a major influencing factor in the world of search engine optimisation.

Since it had been used for many years in an ever-changing industry like digital marketing, the usefulness of DA 1.0 has waned.

Now, Moz is introducing the 2.0 update, an exciting new iteration that represents a rebuild from the ground up.

Despite its waning relevance, domain authority remains an indispensable metric throughout the industry. As such, the introduction of version 2.0 is sure to re-exert widespread influence in the international digital marketing landscape.

What is Domain Authority?

Domain authority is a complex metric developed and operated by worldwide SEO bigwigs, Moz.

Presented as a score ranging from 1 to 100, it’s a metric that is widely used throughout the digital marketing industry to quantify the respective “strength” of a domain (e.g. piranha-solutions.co.uk).

Each website’s domain authority is calculated using a complex algorithm that considers many different factors. These include:

  • Domain age
  • Backlink profile
  • Google algorithm behaviour and updates

Together, these values are used to calculate a score for each domain, ranging from 1 to 100.

The Moz website says that domain authority “predicts a root domain’s ranking potential relative to the domains in our index.”

Put simply, higher domain authority = the greater the likelihood of attaining better search rankings.

How is Domain Authority Calculated?

Only Moz truly knows how its algorithm finds and assigns the authority score to each domain. However, as mentioned above, the company utilises an index of web links to evaluate the relationship between backlink profiles and their influence on search engine rankings.

As well as domain authority 2.0, Moz has also recently introduced Link Explorer – the latest version of this web index. Link explorer now contains over 35 trillion links and uses domain authority as a factor to quantify the likelihood a website has to rank well in a particular industry.

What’s Different About Domain Authority 2.0?

Moz has developed domain authority 2.0 to address a number of issues that had developed with the previous iteration.

But link explorer is just one way in which version 2.0 will work differently to its predecessor.

The system is adopting a state-of-the-art neural network, allowing for greater reactivity to Google’s never-ending search algorithm updates. In addition, DA 2.0 will be calculated using not just backlink profiles but also spam scores and lots of other criteria.

All these factors contribute to a metric that is more accurate and reacts to Google changes in real time.

How does this Affect my Website?

By monitoring your DA score, you can keep tabs on the perceived “health” of your website. However, this score should not be read in isolation. The real usefulness of domain authority becomes apparent when following the DA of both your website and those of your competitors.

“What matters isn’t whether your site drops or increases — it’s whether it drops or increases relative to your competitors. When we roll out the new Domain Authority, make sure you check your competitors’ scores as well as your own, as they will likely fluctuate in a similar direction.” – Russ Jones, Principal Search Scientist at Moz
