Instagram Launches Feature to Tackle Abuse

Facebook-owned Instagram has launched a brand new feature that automatically deletes abusive comments.

The filter allows users to identify keywords and phrases that they find inappropriate or abusive, and the app will then hide any comments containing these.

This feature has been rolled out with the most recent update to the app so most users should now be able to take advantage of it when using the platform.

To start using the anti-abuse filter, you will need to switch on the “hide inappropriate comments” option in your settings and by default, it will use Instagram’s own abusive keyword list.

You can then add to this by writing your own keywords and phrases in the custom keywords box. To add more than one, simply separate them using a comma.

In a blog post, the company said; “We know tools aren’t the only solution for this complex problem, but together, we can work towards keeping Instagram a safe place for self-expression.”

“My commitment to you is that we will keep building features that safeguard the community and maintain what makes Instagram a positive and creative place for everyone.”

Social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, have been in the firing line when it comes to online abuse. Many celebrities, such as Stephen Fry, Ed Sheeran and more recently, Lily Allen, have all deactivated their accounts after receiving nasty messages from online trolls.

By adding this new feature and giving more control to users, it will hopefully be a step in the right direction when it comes to tackling the problem.

Have you ever experienced abuse online? Do you think the new filter would help? Let us know your thoughts on Twitter or Facebook!
